Some of Christ's Words about The Third Person of the Trinity: The Holy Ghost. Taken from the Gospel of John

A quick study of what Jesus has to say about the Holy Spirit in just a few chapters of the book of John (this is NOT an exhaustive study).

John 13-19 are full of exalted words of Christ. These chapters make up 1/3 of the book and are dedicated to the last 24 hours of the Earthly life of Jesus. 155 Verses not uttered in any of the other Gospels. Exalted words from Christ including His High Priestly Prayer.

Within this block of scripture appear nine themes:

What Christ said about:

  • Himself

  • The Father

  • The Holy Ghost

  • The Word of God

  • What He has done for us.

  • What we are to do for Him.

  • The Eternal Destiny of Believers

  • The person and work of Satan.

  • Character and antagonism of the world.

Matthew 28:19, Jesus includes The Holy Spirit as part of the Godhead. I believe that our God is One but triune: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. The proofs of His Being One with God are numerous, but not taken up in this short post.

Here is John, is more teaching about the Holy Spirit than found in all the Gospels.

First His Names:

The Holy Spirit: John 14:26

The Spirit of Truth: 14:17

The Comforter (also Helper, Advocate depending on version) I use the NKJV.

As a "parakletos" He is an unpaid witness for us and pleads our cause.

So He indwells the Believer:

  • reveals and glorifies the Lord Jesus

  • Teaches us "all things", not all knowledge but rather the things of Christ that we need to know.

  • guides us in Truth and declares the things that are to come.

  • and through His indwelling He gives us His Power to ...

Though He does not indwell the unsaved person, He is a Gift to the Lost/unsaved. It is through the Holy Spirits work that the lost are brought to saving knowledge.

In chapter 16 Jesus shares that the Holy Spirit "Reproves"/convicts the lost of:

  • Sin

  • Righteousness

  • Judgement
